Looking overseas to solve the advice gap conundrum

Australia brought the world AC/DC, Vegemite and the selfie; can it also show it how to broaden citizens' access to financial advice?

The government and Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) have launched the Financial Advice Market Review (FAMR) to examine how financial advice could work better for consumers.

As part of the project, it will examine what it can learn from other nations that have attempted to foster a savings culture and promote financial advice and guidance.

Australia introduced its Future of Financial Advice (FOFA) regulation in 2012/13. Similar to the Retail Distribution Review (RDR), FOFA mandated transparent fee disclosure and banned retail investment commission. But it also utilised technology to give more people the opportunity to seek financial advice.

In this exclusive breakfast briefing, adviser technology specialists - with its Australia-based global HQ - IRESS will examine the impact of FOFA and outline what the UK can learn from the Australian experience.

  • What impact did FOFA have on advisers?
  • How might it have helped broaden access to financial advice?
  • What role is technology playing in the Australian advice market?
  • What can the UK learn from the above?
