Families warm to Society’s appeal for homeless

02 March 2018

FAMILIES have provided bags and bags of support for an appeal to help bring some desperately-needed warmth into the lives of homeless people…

Leek United launched its ‘Winter Woollies’ campaign for donations of unwanted winter clothing for some of the most vulnerable individuals in the communities it serves.

Customers warmed to the three-week drive, and provided sackfuls of pullovers, coats, jackets, scarves, hats and gloves for distribution to people.

The Society’s appeal was designed to highlight homelessness – particularly during the worst of the winter weather – and to ensure that the right help reaches those who need it most.

Kevin Wilson, the Society’s Chief Executive, said: “Our ‘Winter Woollies’ campaign has touched the hearts of a great many of our members who responded to it with their characteristic generosity.

“We’re delighted to be able to pass the proceeds of the appeal over to our chosen charities, and very much hope that it goes some way to providing a little warmth for those people who especially need it during the colder months.”

Donations were made at Leek United’s 12 branches in Cheshire, Derbyshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire.

The clothing collected has now been handed to the charities the Society has worked directly with, to be distributed to those who rely on their help:

Derbyshire: Padley Homeless Centre, Derby – https://www.padleygroup.com/our-services/homeless-centre/

Shropshire: STAY (Short-Term Accommodation for Young people), Telford - http://www.staytelford.co.uk/

Staffordshire: The Macari Centre/Night Shelter, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent
