Dudley BS extends support for borrowers with disabilities

15 August 2022

Dudley BS have launched a new mortgage product linked to the HOLD (Home Ownership for People with Long-Term Disabilities) scheme. The new product is an exclusive with MySafeHome, who are the leading advisor for HOLD mortgages. The HOLD scheme supports borrowers with long-term disabilities to get onto the housing ladder, facilitating their need for an independent living situation that is safe, secure, and sustainable.

Their new product tracks the SMI rate directly so that borrowers don’t need to top up their mortgage payments, and is available across the entire West Midlands region. The Society has had a relationship with MySafeHome for a number of years and has helped to power the lives of many individuals with long-term disabilities.

One particular borrower brought a home using the HOLD scheme with a mortgage from Dudley Building Society over 5 years ago. 5 years on, he is relaxed in his home and gets excited when he knows he’s going home. He has also been creating his own family traditions and has control and power that only having his own home can provide.

Another mortgage borrower, who was born with a severe learning disability and developed epilepsy at the age of 17, obtained a HOLD scheme mortgage with the Society as she strived to live a more independent life. Since moving into her apartment, her parents saw an immediate improvement in her quality of life and she commented that “I love my flat. There are no stairs. My super carers come every day. I like my friends coming to see me.”.

James Paterson, Chief Executive at the Society, spoke about their involvement, commenting

“The Society is dedicated to supporting our communities, so the opportunity to provide mortgages for borrowers with long-term disabilities is something that we strive towards. The impact that homeownership has for borrowers with long term disabilities is life changing, as it provides them with valuable independence.”

David Abbey, Managing Director at MySafeHome, commented

“The launch of this new mortgage is a true testament to Dudley Building Society’s commitment to support all members of the various communities it serves, and the Society should be justifiably very proud of giving people with disabilities such an incredible, life changing opportunity.”
