Full circle for Claire as she returns to Swansea Building Society 40 years after starting her career

17 July 2026

Swansea Building Society has welcomed an experienced banking professional back to the organisation where her career first began almost four decades ago.

Claire Atherton has joined the Society as Savings Manager, returning exactly 40 years after she first walked through the doors as a college leaver in June 1986.

After spending a year with Swansea Building Society, Claire joined Nationwide Building Society in 1987, embarking on a distinguished 37-year career which culminated in her role as Member Relationships Director, leading a network of 20 branches and around 120 colleagues across South and West Wales.

Most recently, Claire served as Head of People and Culture at Swansea City AFC Foundation, where she led the organisation's people strategy, governance and culture while supporting its continued growth and community impact.

Now, having come full circle, Claire has returned to Swansea Building Society as Savings Manager, where she will lead the Society's savings proposition across the Swansea region. She brings with her almost four decades of experience in the building society sector, together with extensive expertise in customer service, leadership, colleague development and regulatory compliance.

Throughout her career, Claire has become widely recognised for her passion for supporting colleagues, championing inclusive workplaces and building meaningful relationships within the communities she serves. Alongside her professional achievements, she has also worked extensively with charities and community organisations across South Wales.

Claire Atherton, Savings Manager at Swansea Building Society, said:

"Returning to Swansea Building Society feels incredibly special and is something I never imagined when I first started my career here as an 18-year-old.

"Everything I have achieved professionally began with the opportunity Swansea Building Society gave me in 1986. Forty years later, to come back to an organisation that remains proudly mutual and continues to put its members and communities first is both humbling and exciting.

"I have always believed that banking is about people. Building trusted relationships, supporting colleagues to thrive and helping customers achieve their goals has been at the heart of my career, and I am delighted to bring that experience back to Swansea Building Society.

"This really is a full circle moment for me and I am looking forward to helping the Society continue to grow while delivering the personal service that has always made it so special."

Sioned Jones, Area Manager for West Wales, Swansea & Neath Port Talbot, said:

"We are delighted to welcome Claire back to Swansea Building Society. Claire brings with her an exceptional breadth of experience gained over nearly 40 years in the building society sector. She has a proven track record of leading teams, developing people and delivering outstanding customer service, while also demonstrating a genuine commitment to supporting local communities.

"The fact that Claire's career started here and has now come full circle 40 years later makes this appointment particularly special. Her experience, values and passion for mutuality make her an excellent addition to the Society, and we are delighted she has chosen to return."

As Savings Manager, Claire will focus on continuing to deliver excellent service for customers while helping to promote the Society's range of savings products and supporting its commitment to serving communities across South Wales.
