Click2Check comments on scrapped digital ID scheme

“There has been some confusion in the market in recent days since the Government announced it was scrapping its digital ID scheme. This scheme should not be confused with digital identity verification, which is being used every day by millions of people to prove who they are securely when buying property, opening bank accounts, starting employment or accessing professional services. Digital ID verification technology is already available and widely trusted across the private sector.

"The scheme being scrapped by the Government was proposed by Keir Starmer late last year and involved a mandatory digital ID card being issued to all UK adults to help tackle illegal working. This national scheme may have been scrapped, but digital identity verification is here to stay. As fraud becomes more sophisticated and consumers increasingly expect digital services, trusted digital verification remains more important than ever.

"The UK has a mature identity verification market and significant expertise in this area. We would encourage the Government to continue supporting standards-based digital identity solutions that help businesses meet their regulatory obligations while making processes easier and safer for consumers.

"For sectors such as housing and property, effective digital identity verification is a critical component of modernisation. If we are serious about creating a faster, more secure homebuying process, digital identity services will continue to play a vital role regardless of whether a government-backed digital ID scheme for workers exists."
