Darlington Building Society completes £420,000 complex JBSP mortgage with expat income
05 August 2026
Darlington Building Society has completed a £420,000 Joint Borrower Sole Proprietor (JBSP) mortgage.
The mortgage was secured against a property valued at £525,000, representing 80% LTV.
The case, introduced by Alison Mitchell, Mortgage & Protection Adviser at RobMac Mortgages, involved three applicants. Two of the applicants were students based in Glasgow, while the third applicant, their father, was living in Barbados and earning his income in US dollars.
The father supported the application on a JBSP basis, requiring careful assessment of overseas income and affordability, alongside consideration of the applicants’ individual circumstances.
Darlington Building Society assessed the application on its overall merits, taking a practical approach to the expat income, foreign currency earnings and the structure of the JBSP arrangement.
Throughout the application, Alison worked closely with Darlington Building Society’s Business Development Manager, Kiale Sheret.
This announcement follows another complex completion for the Society earlier in July, when it delivered a £530,000 interest-only remortgage for three applicants in a case that several mainstream lenders had been unable to support.
Chris Blewitt, Head of Mortgage Distribution at Darlington Building Society, said:
“This is exactly the type of complex, real-world case where our market knowledge, experienced underwriters and flexible approach can make a genuine difference. By taking the time to understand the full picture, we were able to support the broker and help deliver a positive outcome for the clients.”
Alison Mitchell, Mortgage & Protection Adviser at RobMac Mortgages, added:
“From the beginning, the support was there, even though this wasn’t a clear-cut case. Darlington took a common-sense approach and considered the case on its own merits. Looking for a JBSP, with the main earner living in Barbados and earning in US dollars, I didn’t think I had a chance of getting it placed.
“The support from Kiale was excellent. He worked closely with the underwriter throughout the process to help secure a positive outcome. The clients are delighted and can’t wait to move.”
