Mortgage advisers can become Chartered Members under pathway announced by LFBF and LIBF
09 September 2026
LIBF and the London Foundation for Banking and Finance (LFBF) are opening up Chartered Member designation to experienced mortgage advisers on the FCA register
Experienced mortgage advisers now have a pathway to become Chartered Members, following an announcement by the London Foundation for Banking and Finance (LFBF) and LIBF, part of Walbrook Institute London.
The two organisations have worked together to modernise the Chartered Member designation for mortgage specialists who wish to demonstrate their professionalism. Currently LFBF and LIBF do not have a route to Chartership for mortgage professionals.
This means that qualified mortgage advisers on the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) register with at least 3-4 years of relevant CPD will be eligible to apply for the modernised status.
The pathway supports the sector and the FCA’s work to further improve standards and support customers through measures like Consumer Duty.
As well as registered mortgage advisers, Chartered Member will also be open to experienced trade and transaction banking specialists.
Chartered Member is a mark of senior status and to be eligible applicants will need to evidence four years of continuous CPD and complete a new ethics e-learning module.
LFBF will not be making any changes to its Chartered Associate or Chartered Fellow criteria, which remain the pinnacle of its Chartership offer.
Most LFBF Chartered Associates are experienced financial advisers and investment banking specialists who have completed a level 6 qualification. Chartered Fellows are required to meet the criteria for Associate status, plus have 20 years of relevant banking and finance experience – of which at least five must be at a senior level. Charterships are awarded by the London Foundation for Banking and Finance, and administered by LIBF.
Harry Weber-Brown, Director of Partnerships at the London Foundation for Banking and Finance (LFBF), said:
“Chartered status is the hallmark of professionalism, recognising not only technical expertise in banking and finance but also a steadfast commitment to ethical practice, continuous professional development and delivering positive outcomes for customers.
“We're delighted to partner with LIBF to create a pathway to Chartered status for skilled and experienced professionals.
“As the organisation responsible for awarding Chartered status, we're proud to recognise the highest standards in banking and finance. We hope this pathway will enable more professionals to achieve Chartered status and further strengthen trust, excellence and professionalism across the sector.”
Chris Ray, Chief Operating Officer at LIBF, part of Walbrook Institute London, said:
“Consumer trust and professional standards are under the microscope like never before, and the mortgage firms we’ve spoken to are incredibly supportive of this development.
“As the biggest provider of mortgage qualifications in the UK, we’re committed to raising the profile of the sector, and opportunities for individuals to demonstrate their professional standards and ethics. We’re proud to work with LFBF to offer this additional Chartership route to experienced mortgage advisers with LIBF qualifications and offer them a clear pathway to higher professional recognition.
“I’d encourage as many of our mortgage advice members as possible to take a look at our website and make a plan for how they can become Chartered.”
