New BoE data shows mortgage approvals fell to 53,400

29 October 2026

Adrian Moloney, Group Lending Distribution Director, Precise Mortgages, comments:

“Although net mortgage approvals softened in September to 53,400, it shouldn’t be interpreted as demand disappearing from the market. Following an uptick in activity over the summer and uncertainty from buyers ahead of the Budget, there’s an expectation for buyers to be weighing up their options. The demand for homeownership remains resilient but matching today’s complex borrower profiles with the right funding structures is an area where mortgage brokers, working in partnership with specialist lenders, can really add the most value.

There are plenty of buyers who are keen to enter the market, encouraged by new initiatives announced in the Budget like the Your First Home scheme. Buyers, however, are taking stock of their household finances as a whole and wisely factoring in borrowing costs. This is where brokers do what they do best; offer tailored financial advice that’s centered around the bigger picture and helping to turn demand into successful homeownership.”
