Steven Amos takes the reins at Hinckley & Rugby Building Society

06 November 2026

Steven Amos joins Hinckley & Rugby Building Society as Chief Executive Officer on 1 November 2026.

Hinckley & Rugby Building Society has announced the appointment of Steven Amos as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective from 1 November 2026, subject to regulatory approval.

Steven joins the Society with more than 20 years of experience in financial services, with a background spanning mortgages, savings, product, marketing and retail banking. Most recently, he was Chief Executive Officer of savings fintech Raisin UK, where he led the business through a period of significant growth, scaling assets under management and expanding its partnerships with banks and building societies.

Earlier in his career, he held senior roles at Together Money, Aldermore Bank, Islamic Bank of Britain and HBOS. He has a strong track record in commercial growth, transformation and building high-performing teams.

Speaking about his appointment, Steven Amos said: “Hinckley & Rugby has a proud history spanning more than 160 years, and it's clear that a lot of hard work has gone into building the Society we see today. The role feels like a natural fit for my experience across the sector, and I was particularly drawn to the team and the Board's shared vision for the Society's future. Building societies have an important opportunity to respond to changing customer expectations and the growth of digital competitors, while staying true to what makes them special. I'm looking forward to working with the team and building on what they've achieved.”

Steven succeeds Barry Carter, who will leave the Society in December 2026 to become Chief Executive Officer of StreamBank. Barry joined Hinckley & Rugby as Chief Operating Officer in July 2022 and has served as Chief Executive for two and a half years.

During Barry's tenure, the Society delivered its strongest profit performance since 2008 and, by September 2026, reached record savings and mortgage balances, with total assets of £900 million. This period also included the Society’s 2024 rebrand, digital transformation, changes to its operational structure, strengthened risk capabilities and investment in colleagues and internal succession.

Reflecting on his time at the Society, Barry said:

“It's been a hugely rewarding four and a half years at Hinckley & Rugby, and I'm proud of what we've achieved together. I'd like to thank the Board and my colleagues, past and present, for their support and commitment during my time at the Society. We've worked hard to evolve the Society and strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive market, and I leave confident that it is well placed to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

Helen McEwan, Chair of the Board, commented:

“Steven's experience, values and leadership approach align strongly with who we are as a mutual and what we want to achieve. We believe he is the right person to lead the Society through its next chapter, and I'm confident he'll help us build on our strengths, deliver our strategy and continue doing the right thing for our members and communities.”

Barry leaves the Society in a strong position for the future, having made a significant contribution during his time with us. His leadership and commitment have been greatly valued, and we wish him every success in the next chapter of his career.”
